I should note that Software Updater now gives a pop-up even before showing the packages available to update that says: "Failed to download repository information Check your Internet connection." And it just hangs endlessly; I cannot even close the pop-up window. Yes, I am. When I download the file myself via firefox, I get a file that matches the hash it is supposed to be and this also matches the file in /var/lib/apt/lists of which the file in /var/lib/apt/lists/partial is merely a symlink. I ran an ISP transparent proxy test and it came up negative. And the ISP is not involved in DNS at all, because Firefox uses Cloudflare DoH and I'm using Cloudflare DoT otherwise for the system currently. For DNS lookup, I get: ; unsigned answer us.archive.ubuntu.com. 3200171710 IN A 91.189.91.38 us.archive.ubuntu.com. 3200171710 IN A 91.189.91.39 And Firefox is using the latter. Are you still having trouble with this file? If you still have this file: /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_bionic-backports_Contents-i386.gz can you determine from looking at it if it looks remotely close to what was expected? The usual cause of this problem is ISP-deployed transparent caches, it might be worth looking into various websites for "am I behind a proxy?". I've seen apt-cacher-ng cause this problem too, but that was seven years ago. The version of this file I retrieved a few minutes ago from all four archive mirrors that I can reach were identical, and matched what the Release file says they should match.
