[Bug 1880723] Re: gnome-shell high CPU usage on Ubuntu 20.04
I'm seeing something very similar. Did a fresh install of 20.04 a week ago. After being logged in half a day things really start slowing down. [Bug 1880723] Re: gnome-shell high CPU usage on Ubuntu 20.04
> Looking at htop I can see gnome-shell takes anywhere between 5% and 50% of CPU, normally between 10% and 20%. This is a little too vague for us to be able to action right now, but I can suggest checking a few things that commonly cause high CPU for other people: 1. Uninstall all non-Ubuntu gnome-shell extensions. 2. Uninstall 'indicator-multiload' if you have it (bug 784055). 3. Try disabling 'Ubuntu AppIndicators' in gnome-shell-extension-prefs. 4. Make sure the clock in your Gnome panel at the top of the screen is NOT set to show seconds. If the problem is still not solved then please run these commands: lspci -k > lspcik.txt journalctl -b0 > journal.txt and attach the resulting text files. And if you are willing then please attach a screenshot of your desktop so we can see if it entails anything unusual I haven't yet thought of. ** Changed in: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete ** Tags added: performance -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1880723 Title: gnome-shell high CPU usage on Ubuntu 20.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1880723/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1880723] Re: gnome-shell high CPU usage on Ubuntu 20.04
After an update and restart, switching desktops feels snappy again. Looking at htop the cpu usage is still higher than expected. And strace still shows many errors: jpmeijers@jpmeijers-XPS13-9333:~$ sudo strace -c -p 2217 [sudo] password for jpmeijers: strace: Process 2217 attached ^Cstrace: Process 2217 detached % time seconds usecs/call callserrors syscall -- --- --- - - 29.470.004451 4 1008 882 recvmsg 24.060.003634 9 379 poll 11.860.001792 8 222 mprotect 7.120.001076 2 515 ioctl 7.020.001060 6 156 write 5.560.000840 5 161 writev 3.250.000491 2 206 getpid 2.530.000382 1133 timerfd_create 2.040.000308 933 timerfd_settime 2.000.000302 462 read 1.870.000283 833 close 1.830.000277 832 2 futex 0.930.000141 35 4 mmap 0.440.66 33 2 getrusage 0.010.01 1 1 restart_syscall -- --- --- - - 100.000.015104 2847 884 total ** Tags added: apport-collected focal ** Description changed: After having a couple of terminals and and Chrome windows open for most of the day, everything becomes sluggish. [Bug 1880723] Re: gnome-shell high CPU usage on Ubuntu 20.04
After logging out and back in the CPU usage seems lower, but without anything but a terminal open gnome-shell is still the biggest user of the CPU at around 1-2% continuously. After gnome-shell the second highest user is: Xorg vt2 -displayfd 3 I see there is an update for gnome-shell, so I will try an update now. jpmeijers@jpmeijers-XPS13-9333:~$ apt policy gnome-shell gnome-shell: Installed: 3.36.1-5ubuntu2 Candidate: 3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 Version table: 3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 500 500 http://uk-mirrors.evowise.com/ubuntu focal-updates/main amd64 Packages *** 3.36.1-5ubuntu2 100 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 3.36.1-5ubuntu1 500 500 http://uk-mirrors.evowise.com/ubuntu focal/main amd64 Packages -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1880723 Title: gnome-shell high CPU usage on Ubuntu 20.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1880723/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
