[Bug 1885749] Re: Enhancement: Remove default Emoji shortcuts

2020-07-01 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Sebastien: Hmm.. That upstream issue talks about Ctrl+. which is a
shortcut I was unaware of. It's apparently something else but
Ctrl+Shift+e, where IBus is involved somehow, and which just as
Ctrl+Shift+u conflicts with shortcuts in certain applications as the OP
pointed out in the bug description.

[Bug 1885749] Re: Enhancement: Remove default Emoji shortcuts

2020-07-01 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks but as Gunnar said those keybindings are useful and not going to
be removed

It could make sense to have them listed in the GNOME settings keybinding
for making them easier to change for users though which has been
requested on https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-
center/-/issues/785

** Changed in: ibus (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Wishlist

** Changed in: ibus (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Won't Fix

[Bug 1885749] Re: Enhancement: Remove default Emoji shortcuts

2020-06-30 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report.

The conflict you point at is unfortunate. Nevertheless, removing those
shortcuts is not an option. Especially Ctrl+Shift+u is a well
established method on Linux to type characters which are not available
via the keyboard layout you are using:

https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/tips-
specialchars.html#ctrlshiftu

Ctrl+Shift+e is newer, but probably used and appreciated by many users.

Your bug makes me think of this IBus issue:

https://github.com/ibus/ibus/issues/2163

That proved to be an Ubuntu specific bug which has been fixed in groovy
but not (yet) in focal. Fixing it in focal would be a way to improve the
situation. If you want that to happen, please file an ibus bug as I
suggested in my latest comment at that issue.

I think you make a too big deal of the fact that ibus-setup is not
searchable in Ubuntu. It's not an Ubuntu specific thing, btw, but it's
the same for GNOME irrespective of distro:

https://github.com/ibus/ibus/commit/66141bbc

Alt+F2 followed by ibus-setup is not "extremely difficult". But indeed,
you need be aware of the possibility to change it that way.
