You should be able to turn the touchpad off using xinput. Actually this is a Xorg issue. If you do not set the following option in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, then you cannot disable the touchpad. Richard, I do not believe that that's the issue. As soon as I read your message I took a look at my xorg.conf file.
