The only way to get them work is: sudo start tty1 tty6 sudo initctl list shows all tty are stop/waiting. Why? I have exactly the same problem . It was working before , i guess some of the recent updates broke it . I am using ubuntu 7.10 32bit on a lenovo T61p laptop .
