Glad you found a workaround, but this is a bit concerning.

Let's keep the bug open for now, in case more people report similar
problems.

sudo rm /var/cache/fontconfig/*
rm ~/.cache/fontconfig/*
sudo fc-cache -r -v
rm -rf ~/snap/chromium/common/.cache/fontconfig/

seems to resolve issue
