[Bug 202791] Re: [Hardy] audacity fails to playback a sound file due to no device

The Playback field in Preferences - Audio I/O was blanked out for me.
So I stopped jackd with:

   ps -e|grep jackd

Then I restarted Audacity and could hear sound (and the Playback listed
OSS: /dev/dsp). Or you can use reZound for much of the same stuff.

er, sorry, only four cups of coffee this mourning, what I did was this:

1) ps -e|grep jackd
2) check the process id (it's the first number on the line for example 9466)
3) sudo kill 9466

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 178895 ***

I do NOT have Pulseaudio installed, and get the same error. I use
Fluxbox with Ubuntu Studio and a Soundblaster Audigy. I do not believe
that this bug is a duplicate of bug #178895, as this is not relating
directly or specifically to Pulseaudio.

I got Audacity working by have Playback set to OSS and Recording set to
'JACK: system'. It did not make any difference to Audacity whether JACK
was running or not.

However, without changing anything whatsoever, when I pressed 'record' a
second time (after the first recording was successful), I got the error
while opening sound device message again. This time, I had to change
the Recording option to ALSA: default. There were no music programs
running, no interruptions, and nothing likely to upset the general sound
setup, except for Kate and Pidgeon IM (which had no messages or activity
during the Audacity recording). Audacity was not re-started or
interrupted. I also experienced this bug previously with GNOME and Xfce.

** Summary changed:

- Windows Vista: audacity fails to playback a sound file due to no device
+ [Hardy] audacity fails to playback a sound file due to no device

** Description changed:

- I have been reading all of these posts and they seem to be helpful (like
- disabling jack) but for the laymen out there, can someone give a step-
- by-step on how to disable jack for Vista. Here are my specs: Realtek
- High Definition Audio, Realtek Semiconductor Corp. 1/15/2008
- v6.0.1.5548 microsoft windows hardware compatibility publisher
-
- Does this hardware even support What U Hear audio, because again, my
- recording box is blank.
-
- Thanks!
+ Whenever I try and playback a file I load into Audacity on Hardy it
+ gives me an error that there is no output device attached or the sample
+ rate is wrong. When I went into preferences I found that there weren't
+ any options for an output device and that the sample rate was correct,
+ this issue maybe because of Pulse Audio.

Ok, I found and installed oss-compat and this provided a number of new

works now. However, it does seem to block all other devices from

I see that I need that package for LiVES (which never worked quite as

I hope this situation to be updated. This kind of things usually stay

2008-04-30 Thread haelen
I've tried all of the above tweaks, including killing pulseaudio, and
have failed to get any playback sound.

I use Audacity for professional work. The only thing I can do now is
send the files I've recorded to another (Windoze) machine and edit the
recorded file there.

I can't record on the Windows smachine because it's way too noisy -
which is why I was recording on my Laptop under Hardy.

I *could* revert to Gutsy, but am loathe to do so unless I really have
to.

Basically, JACK allows applications to send sound to each other instead
of just to the speakers, in realtime. Disabling JACK to make Audacity
work is a workaround, not a solution. It *should* work regardless of
whether JACK is installed, since a lot of the people using Audacity are
also using JACK and Ardour.

Somebody tried this?

I tried but /etc/asound.conf doesn't exist, I tried to make it manually but I'm

I tried to work with audacity while I'm playing something with other

audacity works, so for now it's ok for me.

Fine, what you will do with this?
I know audacity works when it's only audacity recording and playing with alsa
drivers, but if you start another application to play music at the same time,
sound on audacity crashes.

Do you know if there are some module for pulseaudio to take control of
all alsa request or something like this?

It happens with all applications that doesn't have support for esd,
skype for example is exactly the same. If I'm play sound while open
skype, skype starts without sound; but if I'm close or stop playing this
application an open skype it works.
