2008-10-02 Thread rfvuhbtg
I know this isn't exactly what the topic was about, but can Nautilus at
least have a feature where a folder can be opened by dragging a file
onto the folder and holding it there for a moment or two? KDE 3 already
has this feature, so I don't see any patent problems at first glance.

you should search for other patents around the topic, but as written
before that's the wrong place for a such discussion and if upstream
doesn't feel comfortable doing that due to patents they likely have a
reason

[Bug 203938] Re: Nautilus Drag and Drop Improvement

2008-03-22 Thread arnau
Thank you Sebastien,

I've been reading in the upstream bug and it seems that this thing has
been discussed for a while, but I don't see any clear conclusion.

First of all reading the patent 6061061 below, I don't thing that we
would be using any temporary window so this patent shouldn't apply,
perhaps that how KDE implemented it.

patent 6061061
A new behavior in a graphical user interface allows the user to open and close
enclosures, while dragging an object. When the user pauses, gestures, or rolls
over a hot spot on top of an icon or text representing a closed enclosure, a
TEMPORARY WINDOW for the closed enclosure is sprung open to allow the user to
browse inside the enclosure and possible open another enclosure contained
within the temporary window. This process can be carried on throughout a
hierarchy of windows as the user browses for a destination window for the drag
operation. All of the TEMPORARY WINDOWS except the destination are closed when
the mouse button is released, signaling the end of a drag. The user may close
sprung open windows by simply moving the cursor out of the sprung open window,
or by making some other gesture. If an enclosure to be sprung open was
previously open on the desktop, the previously opened window may zoom over to
the current mouse position, and then return to its original position when the
user mouse is out of the window.

I think that making hovering an object over another one for X time the
same effect as a click, is a much more general (and powerful) feature
and this patent doesn't apply.

[Bug 203938] Re: Nautilus Drag and Drop Improvement

2008-03-22 Thread arnau
I checked both patents 6,061,061 and 5,583,984 and in both cases the
description is the same. In the abstract of both patents they always remark
about opening TEMPORARY Windows. That's not our case from my point of view. We
could just left open all our windows, so they wouldn't be temporal.
In both patents they don't say nothing about making the same action as clicking
buttons while dragging an object over it.

2008-03-20 Thread arnau
I've been looking for the patent you mentioned.
Could you pass me a link regarding this patents information?

I've found that yahoo is trying to patent some kind of smart drag and
drop but I couldn't understand what is all about.

Anyway the Gnome Taskbar already has this kind of behaviour, while
dragging any file over the taskbar, windows get maximized or focused
automatically after waiting 1 sec. I don't know if this already affects
the problematic patent.

What will be next? Patent double click? xDD

+ It would be great to improve nautilus drag and drop features when trying
to move or copy files within folders.

My suggestion is to implement automatic folder opening while dragging
  files.

We have a folder structure as follows:

  Root folder:
  --A folder
  ---B folder
  ---C folder
  --Text file

We want to move or copy the text file into the C folder.

It would be great that if we only have one Nautilus window opened that
shows the contents of the root folder (A folder and Text file), we could
move the text file just dragging it into the A folder, wait for 1 second
to open A folder automatically and then dropping the file into B folder.
  Like in Mac OS X.

[Bug 203938] Re: Nautilus Drag and Drop Improvement

2008-03-19 Thread arnau
Just making that while dragging any item and waiting 1 sec over a menu
or icon the same effect as mouse click (or double click over icon) would
give us a very powerful tool.

We could do for example when sending an email:

Drag a file by clicking and holding the left mouse button.
Move the mouse over the evolution Icon.
Wait 1 sec (Evolution which was closed, opens)
Move mouse over new message button
Wait 1 sec (New message window opens)
Release mouse button.
Now we have a new message with the file we selected as attachment.

This is just an example of which type of things we could do.
