I too had very similar problems with breezy. After switching to dapper, many of the problems you mention were fixed. I still cannot sleep, but I can hiberate. I spoke with an ubuntu developer at the Desktop Linux Summit about the sleep issue, and he informed me that he too, having the same laptop, has the same issue.
