Till, Is it ok to close this bug report? I believe this bug has been fixed in foomatic-db 20081027 (Ubuntu Jaunty), according to the changelog: New printer entries auto-generated from PPD files in db/source/PPD using the new foomatic-ppd-to-xml tool from foomatic-db-engine. I printed from Openoffice several pages in duplex and everything works. I only have an altered configuratoin from the default install. I'm using a clean feisty install. I chose the BRScript3 driver instead of the Postscript one. (it comes with feisty, no additional PPD installation). I can confirm the duplex printing problems with the Brother HL-5150D (with Postscript driver) I'm currently running Feisty. In the past I tried all imaginable configurations/combinations without success - and I gave up. (But I never understood this, because with CUPS on my old G3 iBook printing worked perfectly) After reading this bug-report I started a new attemt :-) I selected the BR-Script3 driver instead of the recommended Postscript-driver. This is a PPD file from the installation CD or support-website. Et voilà -- IT WORKS. I can print 2-pages-up and duplex from Evince. I think this has something to do with the new CUPS version in feisty. Does your PPD file (/etc/cups/ppd/queue name.ppd contain a Duplex option (search it for the word Duplex)? I am on Dapper Installed this driver, but duplex as an option is now greyed out. I got the same Error when trying to print several PDF files. But the error didn't occur with all PDFs, even though all the files are very similar. Can you try out the following? If you are on Feisty, update foomatic-db to the newest version and then create a print queue for your printer where you choose the Brother HL-1040 as your printer model and hl7x0 as the driver. If you are on an older Ubuntu version, download the following PPD http://openprinting.org/ppd-o-matic.cgi?driver=hl7x0printer=Brother- HL-1040show=0 and set up a queue for your printer using this PPD file. Can you print all files in duplex now? Frank, I added your information because it could be usefull for other people that have the same printer model. According to the link there seems to be a problem in the PostScript driver for your printer. I think you better use any of the PCL based drivers included with ubuntu (e.g. pxlmono) as suggested here: http://lists.freestandards.org/pipermail/printing-user-brother/2006/001205.html Let us know what driver you used and if duplex printing works with it. Frank, Can you attach cups error.log to find out more about the printer error you get.
