I finally managed to get the Alpha 5 release and confirm that my sound does work - however it is very soft even with everything turned to the maximum. I am not competent to install any packages, but I will try and down load the Alpha 5 release when it is available. The hack from this fourm post mostly fixed the problem: (I say mostly because, though there is sound, I have to turn everything all the way up to hear it.) http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4776771 Hear is the suggestion: Remove /lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/updates (or move to your home directory) and then run: $ sudo depmod -a $ sudo update-initramfs -u $ sudo reboot -- Sound Does Not Work In Hardy On multiple pc's https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/218845 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 218845] Re: Sound Does Not Work In Hardy On multiple pc's
I'm sure this bug is related to the 2.6.24-16 kernal since, as stated above, the sound does't work when I use that kernel. However, when I boot up in the 2.6.22-14 kernel, sound works perfectly. uname -a when sound works is: Linux dell-desktop 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux -- Sound Does Not Work In Hardy On multiple pc's https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/218845 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Also, if you could provide the output of uname -a, that would help. [Bug 218845] Re: Sound Does Not Work In Hardy On multiple pc's
OK everyone- more data. I was able to get sound somewhat working again. I found out that if I run the command: sudo modprobe snd then the /dev/snd directory reappears (with 2 items underneath). I then need to run command: sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel and I then have sound. I still can not run alsamixer. I get the following: alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: No such file or directory I can not yet figure out what to run to get /dev/dsp which I think I need for the mixer function to work. However, I imagine there is a bug that is preventing /dev/snd from being auto-created. How can I get this to happen automatically. [Bug 218845] Re: Sound Does Not Work In Hardy On multiple pc's
To make a command run at boot time, you need to make a script which contains the code and place it in /etc/init.d. Make sure your script begins with #!/bin/sh Then you need to create the correct symbolic links by running the command; 'update-rc.d name of your file defaults' Full details are available here: http://www.debian- administration.org/articles/28 In your case I would create a file called 'robs-script.sh' with the following code inside: #!/bin/sh sudo modprobe snd sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel Then save this file in /etc/init.d and run the command: sudo chmod +x /etc/init.d/robs-script.sh to make it executable. Then type: sudo update-rc.d robs-script.sh defaults to generate the correct links. This code will then be executed with every boot. -- Sound Does Not Work In Hardy On multiple pc's https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/218845 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 218845] Re: Sound Does Not Work In Hardy On multiple pc's
Thanks- I got that all done. Haven't rebooted yet, but I'm sure it will work. The deeper I look, the more I think this is related to a uuid problem. I also noticed that I no longer have dev/disk and had to therefore my /etc/fstab file to no longer use the UUID's and instead had to use /dev/hdax for my differnet mount points. From what I have seen in google searches, uuids (udev I believe) are responsible for mounting /dev/dsp, /dev/mixer, and some other stuff. Perhaps dev/snd as well, but I don't know. This may also explain why I can no longer mount my digital camera as a USB removal media drive. So I still imagine there is a bug here somewhere. Let's see what the bug folks say. Thanks for the help!
