Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 RC1 in VMware Fusion. I chose hostname of
"ubuntu-8.04-rc1", however after install the hostname was "ubuntu-8"
(/etc/hostname). Apparently the content of the hostname after the dot
(inclusive) got stripped away. This is IMHO similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/105890.

Probably hardly makes it to 8.04, but I think it would be cool if
ubiquity informed the user in case of problematic hostname and offered
them chance to change it, not just silently "corrected" the hostname. (I
would have chosen underscore during the install instead of the dot if
ubiquity informed me that the dot is not a good character in the
hostname)

** Affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
