[Bug 220072] Re: [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently
It seems that Ubuntu wasn't the problem after all. I found out that both my service provider and my router has been cutting off my Internet connection. This made the problem hard to diagnose. Marking the report as invalid... ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: New = Invalid -- [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/220072 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 220072] Re: [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently
Ok I'm putting it back to new and unsubscribe myself... ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: Invalid = New -- [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/220072 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 220072] Re: [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently
If you don't use UPnP you need to have a gateway. I'm not saying you need to set it statically but you need to get one from your DHCP-server. See example attached with a valid setup. ** Attachment added: Screenshot-Connection Information.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/13780511/Screenshot-Connection%20Information.png -- [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/220072 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 220072] Re: [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently
Thomas, I'm sorry that I didn't express myself clearly. I don't know if I use UPnP for my internet connection or not. I only remotely know what UPnP means. My Internet connection might be a heavy user of UPnP, and I wouldn't know. If it's important to know this, could you tell me how to find out? I couldn't find the Connection information window you show in your screenshot in my system. I'll attach a screenshot of my eth0 properties window. ** Attachment added: Network_settings.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/13798957/Network_settings.png -- [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/220072 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 220072] Re: [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently
Hello It seems you have done manual configuration. Enable roaming mode so that NetworkManager configures your interface. When you have done that, you can get network information by right-clicking the network-manager applet which appears besides the clock. I don't think you have discovered any bugs in Ubuntu so I will change this to Invalid. If you need help with network configuration you can always ask on https://answers.launchpad.net. ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: Incomplete = Invalid -- [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/220072 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 220072] Re: [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently
No no no, I'm using DHCP, which means automatic configuration - the exact opposite to manual configuration. Don't let those greyed out ip- numbers mislead you, they are there just because when I configured my ADSL device, I had to temporarily set a fixed ip address to be able to control the ADSL device. When I went back to DHCP (automatic), Network Manager left the fixed ip number visible (greyed out), probably just in case I would need them again (which is clever), but they *are not in use*. You can try this yourself by first setting an ip address manually - try with 123.123.123.123 - and then changing back to DHCP (or roaming - it doesn't matter). You can see the address 123.123.123.123 still there, but greyed out. Then you can test your connection: it works! Either you have succesfully connected to 123.123.123.123, or the address isn't being used (the answer is that it isn't being used - because the NM is using DHCP and ignoring the ip-address). The difference between Roaming mode and DHCP is that roaming mode is constantly scanning for available networks. So roaming mode is meant for travel use and wireless connections, when you may change network often (hence the word roaming). There is no need for roaming mode on your desktop PC at home with wired connection (you may use it if you want, but there is no need). It may mislead you that for some reason Ubuntu defaults to roaming mode even for fixed installations. If you would like to know more about this, you could start by googling ubuntu roaming dhcp. It's not possible to tell yet if I have found a bug in Ubuntu or not. Certainly it is too early to mark the report invalid. I'll try the ping trick that you suggested and come back when I have found out something. -- [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/220072 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 220072] Re: [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently
Hello Find out what your default gateway is (connection information on NM applet). Then start Administration Network Tools Ping. Enter that IP address and choose unlimited requests. Start it and then wait for your Internet connection to go down. Observe first if connection information looks the same (re-do that step) and also if the ping is still successful or not. ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: New = Incomplete -- [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/220072 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 220072] Re: [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently
Hello Thomas, The text field for default gateway (gateway address) is empty in Network Manager. I'm using DHCP. [Bug 220072] Re: [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently
In this mode, does the Internet connection work? Seems strange (impossible) that it does without a default gateway. I'm not familiar with UPnP but maybe that's what you're using? -- [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/220072 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 220072] Re: [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently
I don't know what role UPnP might have in this, but my Internet connection is definitely working (when not cutting off), and the connection method is DHCP. I think when an ADSL connection is made with DHCP, one is always supposed to leave the default gateway blank, I remember doing so for years - even when I was still using Windows. The manual of my ADSL device also tells to remove all gateways. -- [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/220072 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
