Here is the what caused the error: Setting up tasksel (2.70ubuntu5) ... No protocol specified Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0 at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/FrontEnd/Gnome.pm line 60. dpkg: error processing tasksel (--configure): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1 It looks like for some reason debconf can not connect to your display and fails instead of falling back to a frontend like dialog.
