This was fixed by the "squid" binary package built from squid3 sources in Ubuntu Xenial and later. Thanks for the reply. Impressed! It's a standard ubuntu 8.04 upgrade from a bog standard 6.06 install using the 6.06 packages. I did an apt-get update-apt-get upgrade too, beforehand.
