I do not specify a port number. Problem seems to be related to certain compression algorithms that sometimes the server proposes and the underlying client does not support. Vinagre had a remote closed connection bug back on Hardy Heron (LTS release) and today in Lucid (the next LTS release) I still find the same issue. You guys are hilarious, and this cr*p of an application, vinagre even more so. Hi Blue I think my mistake was that I used the syntax host:port (eg. host.site.com:5901), instead of the correct syntax host::port (eg. host.site.com::5901). Fix doesn't seem to have worked.
