Every thing worked out ok. I'm now on 8.10 on three of my four machines
so upgrade issues from 7.10 are not any problems anymore :-)   Thanks.

it was a problem in the old nvidia-glx package, which didn't handle file
diversions correctly. Purge the package so you'll be able to update the
rest of the packages correctly, and then reinstall nvidia-glx. 7.10
won't be updated anymore, so I'm closing this bug.
