Issue is fixed for me. For some reason, there was a quote character (') in
front of some of the numbers. This only appeared when selecting French language
in the Formatting options.
I used technique described in this thread to convert all the rows to number.

Pressing CTRL+SHFT + F9 works then recalculating the subtotals as
expected.

This is still a problem on 9.10. Following this guide results in a document that doesn't work as described. http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/How_Tos/Calc:_SUBTOTAL_function Attached is an example document saved in .ods format on 9.10 with a single formula. Most people switching from Excel are not trying to use the rocket science functionality available in OpenOffice - they just need the basics to work. I can't believe that such simple things that stop ordinary people from using OpenOffice have not been addressed yet - after YEARS. I confirm this bug for Ubuntu 9.10 with OpenOffice-Calc 3.1.1. Confirmed here with Hardy and OO version 1:3.0.1-1ubuntu1. As Fabio XXL wrote, subtotal(9;range) works only if applied after the autofilter. It doesn't update if the filter is changed afterwards. Hi there, I'm facing the same problem with the subtotal(9;range) function in all my spreadsheet. I have tried the the suggested fix also using the attached test file and doesn't work. The only way to have the subtotal function to work it's to modify it after apply the filter choice... The package version is: openoffice.org-core 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2.1 Do you have any suggestion about what to check more? I'm sure that your suggested fix did not work when I submitted the bug also because I was able to reconstruct the error in the example I attached (which is not my original file). Yes, probably the underlying bug was fixed at some point but the older version of OpenOffice.org must have created slightly invalid files, so when updating the autofilter it now works. :-) Thanks! The file seems to be somehow messed up? I reapplied the autofilter (Data-Filter-Autofilter) to the top row again and it works fine for me. Can you see if that fixes the problem for you? I replied to the e-mail with detail - sorry I missed that I had to do it here. The subtotal function is supposed to only sum lines visible making it possible to use it in combination with autofilter. I've attached an example (use the autofilter dropdowns) using the two functions 'subtotal' and 'sum' which in this case always (incorrectly) gives the same results.
