That's tha problem. I don't want to start a discussion about SRU here, but in this case (like many others) delta upgrades would help. It's crazy that this must wait for another cycle just because the 1 file is in a huge package. Like I said, Debian is suffering from this disease too (no inc. upgrades, and own slaves of their strict policy) - Ubuntu should do better. C'mon, this bug is known in Ubuntu since August 08, in KDE since February 08, and can be fixed by 8 lines of Code, and the code is there as a diff. I know the update policy, but rules are made for helping us, we (people) are not made for serving rules. This bug is bugging each single user that is logging into KDE4.1, ergo each user of Kubuntu Intrepid. Look at debian, they are stumbling over their own feet because of policy rigidness - and slowly they are learning. It's no security thing - but it is evident - IMHO better software has to be working flawlessly equally to it's safety (which often is theoretical.) This is not about security. It is about forcing a considerable big update upon every 8.10 user to resolve a completely minor issue that does not even disturb workflow. It might be annoying, but that doesn't justify stealing bandwith from every user. Once 4.2.0 is released (which will be soonish) we will publish it via the usual channels (possibly intrepid-backports) then you can galdy update and get the fix. But I have to decline a stable release update. Just my observation, but this problem didn't seem to occur for me until after I installed Compiz. It seems like Compiz is bogging down the system while it initializes and that cuts off the startup sound. Same, I don't use compiz. Just plain KDE4. Honestly, on my laptop I hear it start to play but gets cut off... on my desktop I never hear it. Updated my Desktop to Intrepid Ibex and the problem still exists. I had HH 8.04 KDE4 Remix and it did the same. II still no fix. I even installed kdebase just so it wouldn't report Not installed like my Laptop above. Still didn't do the trick. Really all it added extra on top of what Kubuntu has by default is kwrite and kappfinder. All other kdebase was already installed.
