As cato speaks about root password, it is perhaps important to note for him ubuntu does not set the root password. You log in as yourself in eg Alt + F2 tty, then do sudo command to become root as the main users (your own password). As .kde folder is in your home directory you need not be root though. As a person WORKING with a KDE environment, I do not ever delete my .kde folder as I loose my configs like that. I believe deleting .kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc suffices to make plasma return to the default setting. It was working until today, december 3rd 2008. I have GDM set to open a KDE session and also set to aoutomatically log in as my user. Then I logged in with a GNOME session for just some small things and I accepted an update from the update manager. And now I run in this nasty bug, I have the automatic login and the session set to KDE so there's no way to stop it when it boots, plasma crashes and I'm left with a black screen and I can do NOTHING ! I booted in safe mode but I can't log in because I don't remember the root password, I don't even remember whether I activated the root account. I guess I could boot with a live cd, remove the .kde and .kde4 folders from my home folder and if that doesn't work, I could try something else. But I wonder why was this released for Jaunty only and not for Intrepid too ? KDE 4.2 is still in the beta stage, so it can't be released or even made available via backports at the moment. To work around this bug you can press alt + f2 and then run rm ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc. If this is the same bug (I am 99% sure it is...), deleting your .kde amd .kde4 folders from your home directory fixes it (and removes all of your settings!). I've had this bug on three different computers.
