@Robert Ancell Well at the time I reported this bug I'm pretty sure I was on 8.04. Now I'm on 8.10 and the crashes are mostly gone but times to time when Compiz crash expectingly, I still occasionally lose all my Compiz preferences. I exported my them into a flat file and reload them when they vanish, but it's still mildly annoying. I remember trying to switch from the gconf backend to flat file and it didn't help much. Thanks for the feedback. I'll mark this as a all settings lost after crash as that seems to be the worst behaviour here (crashing is what compiz does well ;) ).
