The original problem, which I reported and analyzed, has been fixed. If you
are having a problem with your hotkeys, it is a different one, and you
should file a different bug. This report is not about ALL hotkey problems,
but only about a specific one.

I've updated the description to be more specific, in hopes of avoiding
further confusion.

[Bug 267682] Re: Hotkeys no longer working in Intrepid on Thinkpads

2008-12-10 Thread Chris Bainbridge
There are a whole bunch of bugs related to Thinkpad hotkeys at the
moment - I don't know if they all stem from the same ultimate issue. It
is possible that these represent symptoms of the same bugs or multiple
independent bugs, some old bugs that have been fixed but re-appeared
recently, and that some of them are new reports and have been fixed but
people are latching on to the wrong bug reports since they seem related.

bug #51537 Wrong handling of volume buttons on IBM Thinkpad notebooks
bug #198197 IBM Thinkpad (T23): no OSD indication for volume control display
inhibit or thinklight - (original report for Hardy, but comments indicate
still present in Intrepid)
bug #198214 thinkpad sleep suspend fn buttons do not work without g-p-m
bug #217504 acpi_fakekey stopped working for certain keycodes
bug #267682 Hotkeys no longer working in Intrepid on Thinkpads

[Bug 267682] Re: Hotkeys no longer working in Intrepid on Thinkpads

2008-11-11 Thread Chris Bainbridge
I guess this is a KDE4 issue for me - fixed it by installing kpowersave.
The process gets as far as acpid running 'fake_acpi 142', which opens
/dev/input/event1 and writes some data to it. Somewhere the event is
being silently dropped between Xorg and KDE4.

With kpowersave running, I can suspend, resume, suspend repeatedly. The
ibm_acpi module no longer reports only one keypress (I expect it has
some code waiting for resume, since in normal use it shouldn't see two
suspends in a row without an intermediate resume).

If this bug is specific to Gnome I'll follow up to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi/+bug/281284

When X isn't running the suspend event gets dropped by hald (addon-
acpi.c :195: event is ibm/hotkey HKEY 0080 1004). I'm not even
sure if the suspend button is supposed to work from the console.

[Bug 267682] Re: Hotkeys no longer working in Intrepid on Thinkpads

2008-11-06 Thread Chris Bainbridge
I can confirm this problem. IT appears to be a kernel issue. The fn keys
for brightness, bluetooth and wifi work fine for me. fn-f4 (suspend)
will only work if I do modprobe -r thinkpad_acpi as noted above. The
issue also occurs if I switch to a console, so it would appear to be
some kind of acpi/kernel problem rather than with xorg event handling.

[Bug 267682] Re: Hotkeys no longer working in Intrepid on Thinkpads

2008-09-26 Thread Matt Zimmerman
With some help from Dustin Kirkland and Julien Cristau on IRC, I have a
working theory for what's causing this:

Hardy: kernel acpi event - acpid - /etc/acpi/*btn.sh - acpi_fakekey
- /dev/input/eventX - hald-addon-input - hald

Intrepid: kernel acpi event - acpid - /etc/acpi/*btn.sh -
acpi_fakekey - /dev/input/eventX - X server - *splat*

It seems that the X server grabs the relevant /dev/input/eventX with
ioctl(EVIOCGRAB), which means it gets exclusive access to the events, so
hald-addon-input never hears them.

Probably what we want in the end is:

kernel acpi event - hald-addon-acpi - hald

but that won't fly for Intrepid as it would require ripping and
replacing acpi-support with hal FDI files.

For Intrepid, we could try to get this working:

kernel acpi event - acpid - hald-addon-acpi - hald

I believe hald-addon-acpi has native support for the weird thinkpad ACPI
events.

OR, we could try to make the input events work somehow. If X insists on
exclusive access, something in the session would need to listen for
them.

Assuming these events are going via the ThinkPad Extra Buttons device,
Timo's FDI file seems like a reasonable way to get the current setup
working for Intrepid. I'm attaching it here to avoid digging through
the comments for it again.

There seem to be two outstanding issues though:
- Some folks with non-ThinkPad laptops are having problems (need to file a
separate bug)
- The brightness keys still don't work (needs some analysis, but potentially a
separate bug as well)

2008-09-26 Thread Aurimas Fischer
Found out how to fix Brightness Up/Down keys in my account based on Marc's idea:
1. rm -rf .gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/host-`hostname`
2. Set System-Preferences-Keyboard-Keyboard model = Evdev-managed keyboard
3. edit ~/.Xmodmap and remove keycodes 233/234 (if there are any definitions).
These
keycodes in Hardy were sent by Back/Forward keys above Left/Right Arrow keys,
but now
these keys have keycodes 166/167 and are already correctly mapped to
XF86Back/XF86Forward,
so no need to remap them in .Xmodmap.
4. Restart X.

[Bug 267682] Re: Hotkeys no longer working in Intrepid on Thinkpads

2008-09-26 Thread Steve Langasek
fwiw, brightness keys here have been working for me all along - but they
aren't generating ACPI events (nor are the volume up/down keys), and
nothing in GNOME handles them; they appear to be acting at the hardware
level. This is suboptimal, but at least in the case of the brightness
keys it's not a regression for me from hardy. (The volume up/down *is*
a regression - whatever volume control these buttons are now
controlling, it's one that I can't see at all from software...)

Anyway, at this point I think that a separate bug report is warranted
for the remaining issues (Fn+F7, brightness up/down?)

Here's the fdi file to disable evdev from grabbing the device:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=ISO-8859-1?
deviceinfo version=0.2
  device
match key=info.capabilities contains=input.keys
  match key=info.product contains=ThinkPad Extra Buttons
merge key=input.x11_driver type=string/merge
  /match
/match
  /device
/deviceinfo

put it in for instance /etc/hal/fdi/policy/thinkpad.fdi and restart hal
 X. Now the battery hibernate buttons work. Events are then sent
directly to hald? Also, for the radio-button to work I need to have
acpid running.

With the above hack the battery key generates keycode 241 and not 244
like with evdev..

[Bug 267682] Re: Hotkeys no longer working in Intrepid on Thinkpads

2008-09-24 Thread Steve Langasek
I'm happy to report that Timo's proposed
/etc/hal/fdi/policy/thinkpad.fdi file works on my system as well,
restoring Fn-F{2,3,12} to working order under my normal account. Fn-F4
(sleep) does not appear to work - so the delta here for me is that
Fn-F12 (hibernate) has started working.

Fn-F4 continues to be problematic, both in that it doesn't reliably
generate events (why is the sleep key the only one that has some sort of
mandatory delay between events when you press it? how long is the
timeout, to confirm that this is really the issue?), and that nothing
appears to act on the events. Interestingly, there's a different ACPI
event depending on whether the thinkpad_acpi module is loaded:
ibm/hotkey HKEY 0080 1004 vs. button/sleep SLPB 0080
0001, and neither appears to be recognized by hal.

Matt does this match the behavior you see if you use the above
thinkpad.fdi?

Timo, if this takes care of the issue, is this an appropriate fix for
the problem, that can be included in hal?

The Fn+F7 button (video output) is also still not recognized for me by
hal, but I don't know if that's related to this bug.

This is wrong as your home or /etc/ directory is reponsible for this.
The GConf directories contain configuration information for your

On my T42 (2379-R5U):

Fn-F4 (suspend to RAM) and Fn-12 (hibernate) started working as a result
of removing the packages Martin Pitt mentioned. The power button and
lock screen combo (Fn-F3) were working beforehand (and still do).

Fn-F5 (wireless toggle) doesn't seem to be working anymore (doesn't
toggle bluetooth or wifi)

The Access IBM, zoom (Fn-Space), and mute buttons still don't work.

Fn-Home. Fn-End (brightness up/down) worked before, but still don't
display the brightness popup.

Removing the packages also seemed to fix a small bug I had where Fn-F2
registered the same event as Fn-F3 (it shouldn't do anything).

Just to collect some data here: It would be interesting to know what
happens if we entirely remove acpi-support and acpid. Nowadays hal has
tons of FDI files for pretty much the same purpose, so at some point
those two should just disappear completely. It works fine on my Dell
Latitude.

For trying:

  sudo dpkg -P --force-depends acpid acpi-support powermanagement-
interface

then reboot, and check whether the power button, sleep key, etc. behave
any different.

For reverting:

  sudo apt-get -f install

Thanks!

(For the record, I'm not proposing to do that for Intrepid, it's way too
late for that, but to get some more debugging for this particular
problem).

you're talking about higher level stuff user specific stuff,
rather than the underlying problem.

@Steve for me this was broken in Hardy with a Thinkpad. Perhaps people who

Important to note also that Thinkpads are different because, as I understand
it, they have keys which
need nvram polling in kernel space -- done by the kernel module thinkpad_acpi.

2008-09-17 Thread registername
@Steve for me this was broken in Hardy with a Thinkpad. Perhaps people who
reported it working in Hardy could give more info.
What info is needed?

I mean, we know from bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/217504 that
acpi_fakekey has
been broken since 2.6.24 was introduced, i.e. Hardy. So I agree with you there
is a contradiction.

So if someone has keys working in Hardy it should be informative to check
*why*, i.e. check
whether acpi_fakekey was called and which codes if any were sent by
acpi_fakekey and
whether they got through.

Note acpi_fakekey is not 100% broken: codes below KEY_MAX do get
through.

You can also look at the scripts in /etc/acpi and look at the codes defined in
/usr/share/acpi-support/key-constants and run acpi_fakekey from the keyboard.

So for me (in Hardy) for example
 sudo acpi_fakekey 10sends a 9 into my terminal, but
 sudo acpi_fakekey 224
does not lower the brightness, and
 sudo acpi_fakekey 154
does not lock the screen

Sorry that was a typo from me, I did try 152 for lock.

You're talking about a different issue (if it is an issue at all). This
worked fine in 8.04.

[Bug 267682] Re: Hotkeys no longer working in Intrepid on Thinkpads

2008-09-16 Thread registername
Is this bug the same as the long-standing bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/217504 ? That one is
caused because the kernel now rejects the fake keypresses from acpi-fakekey if
they are beyond KEY_MAX. This is now by design so acpi-fakekey is dead -- it is
no longer a viable way to handle these keys and
another way needs to be found. Or have I misunderstood? Please see my post and
later ones in that
bug thread.

On my Thinkpad T61, Fn-Home (brightness up) and Fn-End (brightness down)
don't work either.

And yes, this seems to be related to bug #217504 as registername
wrote.

How can a critical bug be assigned to nobody?

2008-09-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
If this is indeed a dupe of the old 217504, could someone verify that
the kernel fix mentioned in this comment solves it?

https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/217504/comments/58

I do agree in reading that bug, it sounds suspiciously like our culprit.
Thanks for pointing to it. If someone can confirm it, we should get the
kernel team to incorporate that patch.

registername, thanks for your clarification. So sounds like the acpi
scripts need to be modified to not use acpi-fakekey for propagating
these events. What should they be using?

@registername, also one question - if the kernel is no longer accepting
the fake keypresses, then how is it that the keys appear to work in a
guest sessions as described in comment #31, etc.?

Bug 162895 reports a similar issue of hotkeys not working on thinkpads.
The reporter said that after removing the thinkpad_acpi module, the
laptop would suspend and resume properly.

I confirm that doing a modprobe -r thinkpad_acpi makes Suspend (Fn-F4)
work again.

Note: other hotkeys still don't work (Fn-F2: lock, Fn-Home: brightness
up, Fn-End: brightness down, etc)

OK, seems after a Suspend-Resume cycle, Brightness-Up/Dn now works as
well.

Note: Fn-F2(Lock) still does not work, though.

I've broken out the .Xmodmap problem slangasek had run into as bug
269619.

I've broken out the suspend key problem that I ran into as bug 269951.
Pitti, I believe that this is the issue you're running into. If you
could, please check your symptoms against what I described there and
comment either way there. At this stage I don't know if my issue is
specific to the 1420N, specific to multiple Dell models, or more widely
encountered.

(The keyboard lockup I mentioned I had experienced earlier on resume
from sleep is gone. Unfortunately, it appears the network is lost on
resume now. I've filed this issue as bug 269956.)
