Probably it was simply a matter of solving the dependencies which aptitude has much more advanced features of doing. Can you try installing kde-guidance using aptitude instead? Can you try start a update using "sudo aptitude full-upgrade"; if there is a dependency problem it should "error out"/give you some options to solve it with a description of the specific problem. You can just say quit after the first option has been presented; but please attach the complete output from the run.
