As a side note, I've been in contact with Benchmark Media Systems and their latest response was: "Our hesitation about testing Linux is that there are so many permutations that exist. To help pinpoint whether this is an alsa-lib regression, please use the following procedure: 1) Determine the index of your USB audio card. The index can be seen in the left-most column in the output of the command `cat /proc/asound/cards'. When I issue paplay /usr/share/sounds/*up.wav I hear the startup sound clip, so that works.
