[Bug 272064] Re: [intrepid] failed to power virtual machine message spawning session... freeze

2009-01-07 Thread Freerk Kalsbeek
Hi all,
I ran into the same problem today. It is quite easy to resolve by performing
the following.

On intrepid:
packages that have to be installed are:
virtualbox-ose
virtualbox-ose-source
dkms
linux-headers-server|generic|

dkms will compile the driver once it retrieves the new linux-headers and
creates a new vboxdrv.ko in /lib/modules/your kernel
version/updates/dkms/

Running depmod -a will do the final trick.
start /etc/init.d/vboxdrv will load the module then

I did not expect the depmod had to be run in advance, thought dkms would
handle all that, but apparently it doesn't.

Good luck
Freerk

2008-10-08 Thread Stephan van Ingen
Hi Daniel,

I maybe f$#k'd-up my laptop yesterday evening for you, so I hope we get a
step closer to a solution for you ;-)

I upgraded my installation to Intrepid, and I have VirtualBox 2.0.2 running.
Can we compare these commands' results between us please?:
--
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/init.d$ ./vboxdrv
Usage: ./vboxdrv {start|stop|stop_vms|restart|force-reload|status|setup}

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/init.d$ ls vbox* -l
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root *8148* 2008-05-31 20:40 *vboxdrv*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 10665 2008-09-04 12:31 vboxnet

Maybe something went wrong in an upgrade somewhere is is the binary vboxdrv
in /etc/init.d not the same object as should be for 2.0.2?

So: is this now still a bug or just a

;-))

Thanks, I haven't tried that yet since my hypothesis is that only one
last step of installation is to be re-done, I assume that that would indeed
work: but only for that one kernel-upgrate. At the next kernel-upgrade the
same issue will come up, I think...

I first want to test a bit further to get an accurate diagnosis :)

[Bug 272064] Re: [intrepid] failed to power virtual machine message spawning session... freeze

2008-09-29 Thread Stephan van Ingen
I have the impression that the problem came up at the moment I received a
kernel update via apt/update manager: is that plausible?
I rebooted with previous version of linux kernel, and Virtualbox started
without problems.

To my understanding this bug needs to be forwarded to Sun/Innotek to
tell them to check whether the virtualbox module is built for the
running kernel or not and then (after confirmation?) do that one step of
the installation again for the current kernel version (as has been done
at installation for the kernel which was running then),

At least, that was the diagnostics from my (same) issue on my laptop.
Regards,

If you purge and reinstall the package, can you see if it gets installed to
the appropriate runlevels? It's working on startup for me, but I did a
fresh install. We can identify or rule out upgrade problems here if you
