The behavior described in this bug report still exists. It's somewhat intentional... Gaim changes your privacy setting on your behalf so that invisibility works correctly. This will DEFINITELY be fixed for Gaim 3.0.0. It is improved in some ways, but there is still MUCH work on privacy that should be done.
