[Bug 290875] Re: No more UI to decide whether receiving file via bluetooth is permitted or not in Intrepid

2008-11-10 Thread Jonathan Ernst
** Description changed:

+ This is a regression between Hardy and Intrepid
+
+ == Regression details ==
+ Discovered in version: Intrepid
+ Last known good version: Hardy
+
+ == Affected use cases ==
+ Receiving files via bluetooth
+
+ == Known workaround ==
+ - use Ubuntu Hardy
+ - use browse this device function (note that browsing a device is not the
same as being able to receive files from another device)
+
+ == Potential future workaround ==
+ - install and use gnome-user-share, an universe package that depends also on
Apache... and that is currently broken (Bug #289487)
+
+ == Description ==
  In Feisty, the user was forced to install and run an obex server to be able
to receive files
  In Hardy this was fixed and there were options (always accept files, ask
user, never accept files)
  In Intrepid there is no more options, so I don't know if my computer is
supposed to be able to accept files or not (because of Bug #211252)

  Bluetooth is severly broken in Intrepid and there are many regressions
  (Bug #211252 and Bug #289836 for example)

[Bug 290875] Re: No more UI to decide whether receiving file via bluetooth is permitted or not in Intrepid

2008-11-07 Thread Daniel James
I hate to think I 'know best' - but the upstream author is wrong. When
I'm browsing photos on my phone that I've taken and I want to send a
particular picture to the computer, the easiest way to do this is click
the little envelope and 'send to' 'silver-0'. Searching through a nasty
folder structure to find the name of a file similar to the file I'm
viewing is definitely more complicated in this case.

I really really *really* don't want to explain to my parents how to do
something like this either. Especially when I was able to demonstrate to
friends how easy it was to use linux with my phone a year ago.

Sorry to be a pain :-/

2008-11-07 Thread Jonathan Ernst
This and if you have another computer in the room and ask your coworker
to send you a file it won't work. (And I'm not sure file browsing would
work without fiddling with the other user's settings).

[Bug 290875] Re: No more UI to decide whether receiving file via bluetooth is permitted or not in Intrepid

2008-11-06 Thread Onkar Shinde
@Andrea,

Sending files to phone works same way as it was there in Hardy. Right
click any file and select 'Send To ...'. Or right click the bluetooth
icon in panel and select 'Send file ...'

The option for receiving file has been removed from UI by upstream authors.
Probably they want users to simply use 'Browse' functionality provided by
nautilus with gvfs backend.

2008-11-06 Thread Andrea Grandi
I agree with Daniel. I think this is a regression from Ubuntu 8.04.
Maybe I'm able to receive files from my mobile phone, but what if I want to
send files TO my mobile phone? Simply, I can't!

[Bug 290875] Re: No more UI to decide whether receiving file via bluetooth is permitted or not in Intrepid

2008-11-03 Thread Daniel James
I can't agree more. I was very happy to recommend ubuntu for laptops as
stuff just worked. Now it seems that laptops are getting less and less
support under ubuntu. Bluetooth needs to be supported out of the box, a
universe package is not intuitive at all. The only way to find out what
you are supposed to do to enable bluetooth file reception is to get on
bugzilla. This would not work in my parent's case.

[Bug 290875] Re: No more UI to decide whether receiving file via bluetooth is permitted or not in Intrepid

2008-11-02 Thread Jonathan Ernst
AFAIK it is now required to install a package from universe (gnome-user-
share) to be able to set up bluetooth file reception.

This is really bad as bluetooth file reception is a core feature of
bluetooth. I was really happy that bluetooth file reception was easier
to set up and working better than on any other OS. Now you have to
install packages, (that depend on Apache !).
