Ah, it turns out the reason why that workaround fails is because the i810 driver's been discontinued. I can get K/Ubuntu to boot with the Vesa driver (id est, insert Driver "vesa" into the Section "Device" part of the xorg.conf file) Therefore, this is almost certainly a regression in the xserver-xorg- video-intel driver. This problem (which also affects my Inspiron 1100) was not present when I installed the 8.04 KDE4 remix but when I upgraded to Kubuntu 8.10 (and it's also in Ubuntu too). The problem seems to be with xorg and perhaps the xserver-xorg-video- intel driver.
