This bug report is being closed due to your last comment regarding this
being fixed with an configuration change.  You're right, you should open
a new bug with package set to network-manager.

Sorry, the problem has been solved... BUT:

This was solved by removing the 'network-manager' package altogether. I
tried a pcmcia card with the atmel chipset on the same machine and it
wouldn't work when network-manager was installed. I'm assuming this bug
report should be closed; the question is, should I open one for network-
manager?

Obviously there is something wrong with the package, this shouldn't
happen.
