[Bug 302095] Re: German pidgin translation inconsistent (spelling)

2008-11-26 Thread Colin Watson
There's no point changing this just in the package - it'd be overwritten
at the next sync from Launchpad. This needs to be agreed with the German
translation team, and the translations need to be changed in Launchpad.

[Bug 302095] Re: German pidgin translation inconsistent (spelling)

2008-11-26 Thread Jochen Skulj
Thank you for this bug report.

I uploaded a new upstream translation to Launchpad some weeks ago. This
change hasn't been included in an language pack yet but I think the
»Passwort« problem should now be fixed in Launchpad.

Are you really sure that the »Buddys« does not affect the upstream
translation? When I take a look at this

http://developer.pidgin.im/l10n/de.po

I find »Buddys« in that po-file. Maybe this is not the newest upstream
translation. If you can tell me where to find the newest upstream
translation I would import the newer one to Launchpad.

BTW, the proper German translation of »Buddies« would be something like
»Kontakte«.

[Bug 302095] Re: German pidgin translation inconsistent (spelling)

2008-11-26 Thread Jochen Kemnade
Are you really sure that the »Buddys« does not affect the upstream
translation?

Yes, I am pretty sure, as I am one of the German pidgin translators. As
stated above, the correct German pluralization of Buddy (as well as of
any anglicism ending on a 'y') is appending an s, making it read
Buddys.

BTW, Kontakte is not a translation of Buddies which would rather be
something like Kumpel in German, but we decided to rather keep the
English term.

[Bug 302095] Re: German pidgin translation inconsistent (spelling)

2008-11-26 Thread Jochen Skulj
Now I understand: »Buddys« is the correct upstream translation. Sorry, I
didn't know that since we usually try to avoid anglicisms. I updated
these strings in Launchpad to the upstream translations:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+source/pidgin/+pots/pidgin/de/+translate?batch=10show=allsearch=Buddys

You are right in saying that »Buddies« is normally translated as
»Kumpel«. However in the context of instant messengers »Kontakte«
reflects the meaning of »Buddies« quite well, is comprehensible for
everyone and sounds just more serious. Besiides my Ubuntu contributions
I am also involved in the German GNOME translation teams and we had some
discussions about that. Finally we decide to use »Kontakte« in all GNOME
applications an especially in empathy.

But maybe we just follow diifferent guidelines. Anyway, I hope I were
able to fix this according to your expectations. This changw will
propably included in the next but one language package update since the
next update was built a week ago and is already released to intrepid-
proposed.
