The bug seems to be that gnome sound recorder tries to use ALSA, but the ALSA plugin for PulseAudio is broken. Gnome sound recorder should use PulseAudio natively. It seemed like it was fixed for a while, and then re-appeared. I just stopped recording sound; my sound card drivers make my mics so quiet there's little point anyways, and it's been like that since 8.10.. I ran and closed gnome-sound-recorder and then tried to find the version via apt-cache policy, but it couldn't find it.
