I fixed it using dselect (it removed a lot of packages, including ubuntu-desktop(), cups and so on). Then I used aptitude and apt-get to reinstall ubuntu-desktop. I re-started the machine, and it seems to have no outstanding updates, and no error messages. it got healed? I shall not look a gift healing in the mouth. Thx for your suggestions.
