Does this machine shutdown in the normal case, ie. if you select
shutdown from the user-switcher?  Could you try the hibernate from VT1,
type ctrl-alt-F1, login, and run pm-hibernate.  This may give us further
messages.

Yes, it shuts down normally.
Hibernation from TTY gives the same result as hibernate from GUI, though the 
VTs are ruined when I wake.
As an extra piece of information I forgot to give, the PS2 and USB ports are 
powered off. Also, pm-suspend shuts off the video card, though pm-hibernate 
does 
not (I can see the cursor).
