I removed splash from the menu.lst file and it appears to have successfully resolved the problem. Shutdown is now in a handful of second. Previously the machine would take 90+ seconds and default to the log-in window. Then it would take at least that to shutdown from there. I also have Kubuntu Karmic 9.10 on another Lenovo X200 laptop. I run Jaunty 64 (all updates installed) on my old Medion MD96400 that has an AMD64 Turion Mobile 1.6GHz CPU and 512 MB ram. I saw the tip about removing the "splash" and "quiet" boot options and adding "vga=791", so I did a more thorough test, trying all combinations of vga=791, splash and quiet (0=off, 1=on). My results were: V S Q 0 0 0 - Works 0 0 1 - Works (My new default options) 0 1 0 - Does not work 0 1 1 - Does not work (The default options) 1 0 0 - Works 1 0 1 - Works 1 1 0 - Works (!) 1 1 1 - Works (!) So it seems that there are two workarounds: - Without vga=791, splash has to be disabled for it to work. - With vga=791, it does not matter if splash or quiet are enabled or not. The boot option vga=791 means 16 bit 1024x768 kernel video mode according to http://www.pendrivelinux.com/vga-boot-modes-to-set-screen- resolution/. Since my screen is 1280x800, this pushed the splash screen out of place, so I chose just to disable splash without adding vga=791 as my new default options.) My startup time was the same in all the tests. I ran Jaunty on HP Pavilion a1228x w/AMD64. I can confirm the issue too. The issue is solved after the modification. The Issue does not appear if i hibernate the Notebook. I confirm, that workaround by Robert is good for me, when splash is turned off in menu.lst system reboots well. I can confirm this still exists. This bug is still present for me while using the live CD x86-64, beta version. My applied changes to grub listed above still work, but w/o splash.
