[Bug 335968] Re: DVD missing after install
It seems to me like this has reportedly been fixed in BIOS changes or caused by other hardware issues, so I'm going to close this as Invalid (because we don't know exactly what fixed it), as well as since this is an old bug. Marco, if you're still seeing this issue on newer releases than 10.10 (which is no longer supported); please file a separate bug, making sure you do so using ubuntu-bug, so that all the necessary information is automatically included. That way we can more easily fix the particular issue you're seeing. ** Changed in: grub2 (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/335968 Title: DVD missing after install To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/335968/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 335968] Re: DVD missing after install
Hi, I apparently solved the problem (Ubuntu 10.10, but it had the same problems on 10.04, Athlon x2 5000 Nforce2 machine) working on bios settings: switched the sata configuration to AHCI. Previously i tested many solutions suggested in various forums, like switching the boot order (first dvd player then hd), and manually adding hald to rc.local or cdrom configuration in fstab, all without any result. I still have minor issues on an external usb HD which doesn't automount. The strange thing is that in fstab my boot device (fixed disk) is indicated as /dev/sda1, instead it is /dev/sb1 and mounted as /. I think that automount of external drive fails because it tries to mount it as /dev/sdb1 (looking at dmesg|tail), which is the HD. It works flawlessy with manual mount as /dev/sda1... I'm a big newbie of Ubuntu I don't know if anything of the above makes any sense, however i'm pretty satisfied after a month of useless tests. Maybe adding usbmount could solve the last problem? -- DVD missing after install https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/335968 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I closed my bug report on this issue. In my case it was a configuration issue. The jumpers at on the DVD drive were not correctly set up. Re: [Bug 335968] Re: DVD missing after install
I somehow managed to fix this by messing around with kernels. I cannot remember exactly what I did but I think I ended up with a dual boot 8.10 and 9.04 machine. On startup a the loader offered me a variety of options, one of which allowed me to boot 9.04 with DVD. kernel 2.6.28-11 and 2.6.27-7 both seem to work.
