[Bug 335968] Re: DVD missing after install

2015-05-04 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
It seems to me like this has reportedly been fixed in BIOS changes or
caused by other hardware issues, so I'm going to close this as Invalid
(because we don't know exactly what fixed it), as well as since this is
an old bug.

Marco, if you're still seeing this issue on newer releases than 10.10
(which is no longer supported); please file a separate bug, making sure
you do so using ubuntu-bug, so that all the necessary information is
automatically included. That way we can more easily fix the particular
issue you're seeing.

[Bug 335968] Re: DVD missing after install

2010-10-27 Thread Marco Tommesani
Hi, I apparently solved the problem (Ubuntu 10.10, but it had the same
problems on 10.04, Athlon x2 5000 Nforce2 machine) working on bios
settings: switched the sata configuration to AHCI. Previously i tested
many solutions suggested in various forums, like switching the boot
order (first dvd player then hd), and manually adding hald to rc.local
or cdrom configuration in fstab, all without any result. I still have
minor issues on an external usb HD which doesn't automount. The strange
thing is that in fstab my boot device (fixed disk) is indicated as
/dev/sda1, instead it is /dev/sb1 and mounted as /. I think that
automount of external drive fails because it tries to mount it as
/dev/sdb1 (looking at dmesg|tail), which is the HD. It works flawlessy
with manual mount as /dev/sda1... I'm a big newbie of Ubuntu I don't
know if anything of the above makes any sense, however i'm pretty
satisfied after a month of useless tests. Maybe adding usbmount could
solve the last problem?

2010-10-18 Thread Malcolm Jarrett
I closed my bug report on this issue. In my case it was a configuration
issue. The jumpers at on the DVD drive were not correctly set up. Somehow
the drive appeared at the boot stage but not once Ubuntu was up and running.

Re: [Bug 335968] Re: DVD missing after install

2009-10-05 Thread Malcolm Jarrett
I somehow managed to fix this by messing around with kernels. I cannot
remember exactly what I did but I think I ended up with a dual boot 8.10 and
9.04 machine. On startup a the loader offered me a variety of options, one
of which allowed me to boot 9.04 with DVD.

kernel 2.6.28-11 and 2.6.27-7 both seem to work.

This is similar to Bug #374999. In any event. My new install of Jaunty
has no CD/DVD drive now. I've re-installed three times now and tried
everything but can't get it to work. Disabling the CD/DVD drive does not
work. Changing BIOS settings does not work.

LILO does not work. Post #11 is correct, LILO does not play nice with
kernel updates. On reboot you get the blinking cursor of death. Any
other suggestions for a solution?

Same problem with new MALIBAL satori.

After installing 9.04 dual boot the CD/DVD is missing in XP partition.
The optical drive works in Ubuntu but it not in the XP partition. In
fact; the CD/DVD drive is not even listed device manager now or listed
in the registry.

Many posting on the internet about this. No one has a solution except
LILO. However, there are problems with LILO and kernel updates so LILO
is not a solution either.
