I installed the 2.6.27-02062726 kernel and it worked just fine. Firmware was loaded and the interface is available. Sorry for the delay. This bug seems is a regression since 2.6.28 kernel release. I will keep my eyes on this issue. The problem is clearly in the kernel package as downgrading from Jaunty's linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic to the linux- image-2.6.27-11-generic from Intrepid has made it go away.
