ok my fault. the volume-control hotkeys on my thinkpad t60 messed things
up. e.g.:

muting / unmuting shows correctly but in real to activate sound again I
need to press the louder hotkey again. (although shown via alsamixer
-c0 / notify / gnome-mixer correctly as unmuted)
