Bear in mind that the patch I attached to my previous message was generated from speedcrunch git master with git diff, so it might not apply to Ubuntu's speedcrunch source. It's only two lines, though, so it shouldn't be too difficult to apply by hand. I confirm this bug with speedcrunch in Ubuntu 9.04, with gnome and compiz.
