I was having some issues with Jaunty Xubuntu, saw that there was a distribution upgrade. Thinking that might fix my problems, I went for the upgrade, and was not so thrilled to discover I'd 'upgraded' to Ubuntu. My aging laptop couldn't handle Jaunty Ubuntu, I was surprised I was able to download Karmic Ubuntu. But not terribly surprised that it failed to work from the moment I restarted after installing. I am getting the dreaded 'Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself.' If I try to run Ubuntu in low-graphics mode for just one session, I get a black, unresponsive screen. If I try any of my other options, I end up at a dead end, though without the black screen. I don't know how to get to the terminal with no menus (I am very lo-tech quite new to Linux); I saw that I'm supposed to type in dpkg- reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg (although I also saw comments that this command doesn't work with Karmic), but even if it does 'work', I don't have a clue what to do next. What I would like to do is download Karmic Xubuntu (as I thought I was doing), and not try to cope with Ubuntu. Sadly, the low-graphics mode for just one session doesn't work, or I could try to get online that way...
