Hi hitaisin, Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p alsa-base 363752 Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. Same problem in 9.10 also, pulseaudio also fails to work. I'm having this issue with my ecs amd690gm-m2, realtek alc883. Everything worked perfectly with ubuntu 8.1, but now I have no 5:1 sound after upgrading to 9.04. As described above, when I choose 5:1 sound in VLC, i get this error: Audio output failed: The audio device surround51 is already in use. I'm having the same exact problem. Sound is stereo and comes from all speakers, but nothing changes when I run vlc --aout alsa --alsadev surround51.
