Ubuntu 8.10 is end of life and no longer supported, see: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2010-March/000130.html Which version of Ubuntu are you using? The recent Server Guide releases have used: sudo auth-client-config -t nss -p lac_ldap So I believe this bug has been solved, but please confirm that that is the case.
