Well, at one point I tested it by killing the process and when I
restarted it began recovery.

Then, I upgraded to 3.9.91.

Then, my system froze.I lost a lot of work.
Did you put the autosave files in /tmp, which is erased when the system 
reboots?   Or did you break auto-save in the new version? I tested again by 
making changes, waiting a long time, and then killing.   No recovery.

Where do you put the autosave files?

Autosave is absolutely crucial.
