In Oneiric this seems to go in the wrong direction, i.e. it seems to be more difficult for those (most users?) who don't like the login sound to figure out how to disable it. Bug is more than 2 years, old, "confirmed", really annoying, probably affecting much more people than those who took the time to report it, probably easy checking and fixing, still "undecided" and "unassigned". So what ? A few people have reported their first experience with Ubuntu to be a literal blowing out of speakers due to the login sound.
