@benjaminzsj I forgot to say this before, i moved the apt-check executable to another folder and that ended the hangs. I haven't noticed any adverse effects, which, must exist for sure. I'm having the same problem on my Jaunty, after updating software through Synaptic, total hang it is. Only the hard disk grind makes me realise the machine is still running, I believe the process uses up all my memory as well as swap space.
