I also experience similar problems, although I do not use freecell or any games. Each time it happens the last message in dmesg is pid.c: Stale PID file, overwriting.. I also notice the screen flickers black every now and then as if it is about to crash, but it doesn't most of the time. Occasionally I get logged out though. [Bug 407488] Re: logout without warning shortly after login
I found a workaround for the problem on my second machine: after getting the boot menu to show up, I found that booting to the prior kernel version instead of the current kernel version makes everything work fine. In other words, instead of booting the default: Ubuntu 9.10, 2.6.31-16-generic== bad, causes logout after login I use this one: Ubuntu 9.10, 2.6.28-17-generic == works fine I'm going to set this kernel version as my default boot option until this gets fixed. Hope this helps somebody else. -- logout without warning shortly after login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/407488 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Please disregard my post #17: the problem came back. Apparently I fooled myself with 2 random successful logins in a row. [Bug 407488] Re: logout without warning shortly after login
I just encountered the same problem on another, much older computer on which I had successfully been running Ubuntu 9.04 for about a month. I upgraded to 9.10 but now about 4 times out of 5 I can't log in. When I try, some kind of text appears very quickly (grey on a black background), but is quickly replaced by the graphical spotlight login screen. Incidentally, for some reason I don't understand, I can't get my own advice above (see post #13) to work: there is no such file as /etc/default/grub on this machine. (Why is an install of 9.10 on two different machines so different? This is crazy-making!) Anyway, I managed to get lucky and log in after trying about 5 times. I ended up editing /boot/grub/menu.lst, setting the timeout to 10 seconds and commenting out the part about hiding the boot menu by putting a '#' in front of that line. Now I get the boot menu, but I still can't log in most of the time. It's hard to understand how something this broken could be released. Surely the first two random computers I tried installing on are not both statistical outliers? Is this the best way to report bugs? Does anybody in Ubuntu development really read these? If I'm barking up the wrong tree, I would like to be corrected so I can help make this work. [Bug 407488] Re: logout without warning shortly after login
I suspect there may be different bugs concerning different people here. It seems to me at least Anita ought to look at Bug #465317 and Bug #444518 (possibly duplicates of each other): perhaps one of those applies more to your case. As for Don's, where hiding/showing the GRUB menu seems to have an effect, I think it's different from #465317 and #444518 (and perhaps more in line with this one). I suspect this, because I'm affected by the xorg-video-intel bug (Solitaire draining memory and X crashing as result), and my system has had the GRUB menu showing since installation day. Ie. having the menu show doesn't prevent the crash. -- logout without warning shortly after login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/407488 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 407488] Re: logout without warning shortly after login
I believe I have found a workaround for my problem, and I'm hoping that not only will this help other people work around it also, but it may help developers track down the bug. What I did was enable the grub2 bootup menu that is hidden by default. Apparently Ubuntu 9.10 uses a new bootloader called grub2 (instead of the older grub). Instructions for those who want to try this also: 1. Open a command prompt by clicking Applications, then Accessories, then Terminal. 2. Type in the following command: sudo gedit /etc/default/grub 3. When the editor opens up, find the line that looks like this: GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 and put a '#' at the front, to make it look like this: #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 4. Click the Save button to save the file, then close the editor. 5. Back in the Terminal window, enter the following command: sudo update-grub 6. Shut down Ubuntu and restart it. This time instead of instantly going to the login screen, you will see a startup menu. You can either press Enter to boot up instantly, or you can wait 10 seconds and it will do it by itself. After doing this, I have been able to reboot, log in, and shut down again 10 times in a row without a single instance of the bug. When I took the '#' back out of /etc/default/grub and re-ran update-grub, the very first time I rebooted the bug came back (it logged me back out as soon as I logged in). Fortunately, I was able to get back in after a couple more tries and fix it back. This definitely hides the bug... no idea why, but it works for me. -- logout without warning shortly after login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/407488 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 407488] Re: logout without warning shortly after login
I am having a very similar problem with Ubuntu 9.10. About 2 out of 3 times when I log in, I see the graphics screen change quickly to a black text-only screen, then I see some kind of text (maybe an error message) print too quickly to read, then it pops right back to the graphical login screen. If I keep trying, eventually I can get logged in. This may be a red herring, but the problem seems to have started right after I changed my machine's hostname from 'ubuntu' to 'biscuit'. Yesterday I edited /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts as follows: dcr...@biscuit:~$ more /etc/hostname biscuit dcr...@biscuit:~$ more /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 biscuit localhost.localdomain localhost #127.0.1.1 ubuntu # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts ::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback fe00::0 ip6-localnet ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ip6-allnodes ff02::2 ip6-allrouters ff02::3 ip6-allhosts dcr...@biscuit:~$ ls /etc/hostname /etc/hosts -la -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8 2009-12-18 09:51 /etc/hostname -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 283 2009-12-18 10:02 /etc/hosts The one thing I can see that definitely changed after this point in time in my /var/log/messages are the following scary looking segfault and error messages: Dec 19 17:19:49 biscuit kernel: [ 43.734886] gnome-clock-app[1857]: segfault at c ip 00e11705 sp bff86f60 error 4 in libpolkit- gobject-1.so.0.0.0[e06000+19000] Dec 19 17:21:28 biscuit bonobo-activation-server (dcross-2059): could not associate with desktop session: Failed to connect to socket /tmp /dbus-XqVL6LkNEn: Connection refused This is very frustrating, and any help would be appreciated. [Bug 407488] Re: logout without warning shortly after login
No response? This bug would make it impossible for me to recommend ubuntu to anyone.
