[Bug 414330] Re: When using vesa driver system with S3 Inc. VT8375 [ProSavage8 KM266/KL266] crashes when leaving graphics mode

2011-01-17 Thread Tormod Volden
Please be more specific, is this with the 1:2.3.1-2ubuntu2.1 from
maverick-proposed? In that case, does it work fine with
1:2.3.1-2ubuntu2?

The corrupted consoles are often seen after a server crash, can you
please attach /var/log/gdm/:0.log.1 just after the corruption is seen?

2011-01-16 Thread Peter Belew
Running 10.10 maverick with updates through today, there is a problem
that I can't switch to text console - the screen is full of big blocks
of color. I have to use alt-F8 or alt-F9 to switch back to the X

[Bug 414330] Re: When using vesa driver system with S3 Inc. VT8375 [ProSavage8 KM266/KL266] crashes when leaving graphics mode

2009-09-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-vesa

System with S3 ProSavage8 running 8.04.3 LTS crashes on logout

The 8.04.3 LTS system runs Ok, but crashes when switching to a text
console, when logging out (to change users), or when shutting down. (See
  below)

This is the same system mentioned in comments under my name in bug
  #217004.

Since that report, I installed Debian instead, then recently tried to
install Ubuntu again. The display and display controller were not
recognized when trying to boot live CDs from 7.10 through 9.04.

I ended up being able to boot the 6.06.1 LTS desktop CD, and install
from that. For this version, it took several probes for the software to
determine the proper display mode. I had selected 'safe mode' and an
explicit 1024x768 resolution in the boot menus before installing.

This system ran successfully, but on each boot it took several attempts
for the driver to determine the correct mode.

Then I did the online upgrade to the latest LTS version:

DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS
Linux billy 2.6.24-24-386 #1 Fri Jul 24 22:05:29 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

This system, after the upgrade, boots successfully. The screen
resolution is arrived at more quickly. I was able to install apache2,
php, mysql, etc for a web site. However, any action involving changing
to text mode or a console display results in the system crashing, with a
blank screen. The system becomes inaccessible over the network, either
through http or ssh - it's quite dead.

  So - ctrl-alt-F2 etc to a console - crash. Logout - crash. Shutdown -
  crash.

This is with the VESA driver - I later obtained an updated xserver-xorg-
video-savage driver from Tormod Volden which solves the problem.

This system is set up to triple-boot among XP, Ubuntu, and FreeBSD. I
just installed Xorg and Gnome on the FreeBSD partition - the vesa driver
on that exhibits the same problem.

I will attach config files and logs collected shortly after experiencing
  the crash.

[Bug 414330] Re: When using vesa driver system with S3 Inc. VT8375 [ProSavage8 KM266/KL266] crashes when leaving graphics mode

2009-08-16 Thread Peter Belew
From comments to bug 217004:

From Tormod Volden:
Peter, I updated the Hardy xserver-xorg-video-savage package on
https://launchpad.net/~tormodvolden/+archive/ppa to the latest version,
so you can try it (I haven't tested it myself).

From me to Tormod Volden:
Tormod - installing your savage driver solved the problem. After
installing it, I disabled Xorg running at runlevel 2 by renaming the
symlink to gdm in /etc/rc2.d and restarting the system (with the reset
button this time), then booting and determining that 'reboot' works
properly from the shell, with Xorg and the vesa driver disabled. I
changed 'vesa' to 'savage' in xorg.conf, and tried startx from my user
account, and determined that shutdown worked fine. Then I renamed the
symlink back again, and rebooted again. After that, I can logout,
switch to a console and back, reboot, etc properly.

It turns out that the vesa driver with FreeBSD 7.1 (running Xorg and
Gnome also) has the same problem, running on the same computer. I
haven't tried a savage driver on that OS yet.

I'm downloading the Karmic alpha 4 ISO right now.

Also I downloaded and installed the new vesa driver -

r...@billy:/home/peter/crash# dpkg -i

(Reading database ... 112177 files and directories currently installed.)

Unpacking replacement xserver-xorg-video-vesa ...
Setting up xserver-xorg-video-vesa (1:2.2.1-1ubuntu1~hardy) ...

and specified vesa in xorg.conf. Now I get a blank, black screen when
X starts. However, I can still switch to a text console or log in
remotely. I've attached the resulting Xorg.0.log file.

I booted the Karmic alpha 4 CD in safe mode, and X came up eventually in
800x600 resolution, apparently using the savage driver, after trying
vesa first. The log is interesting ... a lot of tests resulted in a
useable mode selection.

I would certainly appreciate the revival of the old boot-time screen
mode selection from 6.06 and 7.xx versions, in this case!

If I could boot into text mode, I could try inserting an xorg.conf file
before starting with xinit.

CD. I mounted the disk partition with /etc/X11 on it, and copied
xorg.conf into the live CD's /etc/X11, switched to a text console, and
restarted X with 'service gdm restart'. The Gnome screen came up with
half a dozen possible 4:3 ratio resolutions, from 1024x768 on down.

I've attached the Xorg.0.log file from that.

[Bug 414330] Re: When using vesa driver system with S3 Inc. VT8375 [ProSavage8 KM266/KL266] crashes when leaving graphics mode

2009-08-16 Thread Peter Belew
Here's xrandr.log

In this case, I renamed the xorg.conf file to xorg0.log, to disable it,
switched to a text console, shut down X with 'service gdm stop', and ran
the command

   xinit -e 'sh -c xrandr --verbose xrandr.log '

[Bug 414330] Re: When using vesa driver system with S3 Inc. VT8375 [ProSavage8 KM266/KL266] crashes when leaving graphics mode

2009-08-16 Thread Tormod Volden
Thanks, this means that the Karmic savage driver is OK, so you do not
need to file a bug for it. The need to set frequency ranges manually is
because EDID transfer fail (getting monitor information through the
monitor cable), which I do not think is the driver's fault. It is the
server's fault that the fallback resolution is only 800x600.

The Xorg.0.log.vesa above is actually using savage. You said it tried
vesa first, is there an Xorg.0.log.old using vesa? I am not sure the
xforcevesa thing for safe mode works any longer.

To log in on the live CD, the username is ubuntu and the password is
empty.

If you get something on the screen so you see what you're typing, you
can just run xrandr --verbose xrandr.log. The other xinit thing is
only a workaround if the screen is black or turned off so you don't see.
