[Bug 432400] Re: Karmic hangs on boot

2009-11-02 Thread pointo1d
I saw a similar problem, to the OP, on an IBM T30 following upgrade from
Jaunty to Karmic - I'd been having problems booting under Jaunty since
2.6.28-15, I had been and still am, using 2.6.28-14 as a working kernel.
That [booting problems] being said, removing the 'quiet' clause from the
2.6.31-14 entry in menu.lst, I observed that the boot hangs, not
responding to the keyboard, whilst attempting to run fsck - a situation
only remedied by pressing and holding, the power button.

[Bug 432400] Re: Karmic hangs on boot

2009-11-02 Thread pointo1d
Agh!! How I wish I could type accurately - I actually removed the
quiet clause from the newest i.e. 2.6.31.14 kernel stanza ... not from
2.6.28-14 as I just claimed.

[Bug 432400] Re: Karmic hangs on boot

2009-11-02 Thread LuisMondesi
i just hit this bug on a new karmic installation on a Toshiba Satellite
A105-2101.

I tried everything I could:

- booting from cdrom
- booting from USB
- booting from netboot

until I removed quiet and then saw the infamous clocksource tsc unstable
(delta = . ns )
I tried clocksource=acpi_pm also =hpet and other suggestion from different
posts online.

None helped! bummer, I had to finish this by tomorrow morning :-(

I upgraded to kernel 2.6.31-11, it booted with no problem. I'm using

[Bug 432400] Re: Karmic hangs on boot

2009-09-26 Thread Mike Trim
I am also experiencing a problem with hangs during boot up on karmic,
but I usually find that switching between virtual consoles (Alt+F1 -
Alt+F8) in order to find any error messages results in it continuing to
boot.

[Bug 432400] Re: Karmic hangs on boot

2009-09-23 Thread Tony Kernan
I installed the 2.6.31-10.35 update today and I still can't boot to it.
That kernel hangs during boot with a blank screen. I think that kernel
is borked on my system. How can I re-install the 2.6.31-10 kernel?

[Bug 432400] Re: Karmic hangs on boot

2009-09-23 Thread Tony Kernan
I used Synaptic to re-install 2.6.31-10.35, that didn't make a
difference. I've attached an exert from kern.log when I try to boot to
2.6.31-10, it just shows some pkg info. What is this?

Robbiew - should someone be assigned to investigate this? I'm not sure
there is enough info in this bug to get someone to fix it, so I didn't
want to assign it to keybuk just yet.

[Bug 432400] Re: Karmic hangs on boot

2009-09-21 Thread Tony Kernan
I somewhat fixed it. It was during the great Karmic update problem last
week. I still can't boot to 2.6.31-10 w/o it hanging, it gives me a
black screen. I tried 'nosplash' and I see a lot of udev errors.

I boot to 2.6.31-9 with no problem.

2009-09-21 Thread Robbie Williamson
This appears to be kernel related. What does this command return:
  # dpkg -l linux-image-2.6.31-10-generic
The latest should be 2.6.31-10.34

[Bug 432400] Re: Karmic hangs on boot

2009-09-18 Thread Tony Kernan
I was able to use the live cd for recovery and issue the chroot cmd. I
had to run apt-get upgrade a few times to get everything. I am able to
boot with 2.6.31-9 but not 2.6.31-10. Boot seems slower, but at least I
can boot now recovered.
