Just to note, as of 11-7-09, I'm still seeing this problem. Mounting my Sony 2gig microvault thumb drive ALWAYS mounts as a music device + icons and has the rythmbox "open with" dialog associated with it. Maybe I'm missing something, but my ipod is still just has the usb drive icon. I am using 007-2ubuntu2 version. Is this still outstanding?
