This has been fixed upstream, 0.7 is released. 0.7-2 is available in Debian too. I know this has been fixed upstream and it may already be fixed in lucid's 0.6 version of xwax. For now, an easy workaround is to install the ttf-bitstream-vera font package. I'll work on making a patch that will require this package on install. My mistake, it is infact removed entirely from the current Karmic repositories. A manual install of the Jaunty .deb file will fix it though.
