I believe this may have something to do with the way alsa and pulse work 
together or the way pulse amplification works with alsa. I previous builds when 
pulse removed sound did not have the same issue.
This is still existent even w/ new sound card and proper driver.
In 9.10 though if pulse is removed the gnome-volume control will not work.

this may be associated with gnome-volume-control as it is where hardware 
settings have no option for the 6 or 8 channel option under the profile drop 
menu 
I do notice that the pop seems to be lessened if custom sound effects are 
chosen i.e.-sonar,drip,bark
but that has no effect on the recording issues that did not previously exist 
without pulse
